Sussex Air Conditioning supplies and installs swimming pool heat pumps for domestic and commercial pools across East Sussex and West Sussex. A pool heat pump is the most energy-efficient way to extend your swimming season – keeping your pool at a comfortable temperature from spring through to autumn, and year round for heated indoor pools, with running costs significantly lower than gas or electric heaters.

How does a swimming pool heat pump work?

A swimming pool heat pump works by extracting heat energy from the surrounding air and transferring it into your pool water – the same principle as a domestic air source heat pump, but designed specifically for the demands of continuous pool heating. Because the system moves existing heat rather than generating it, a modern inverter pool heat pump can produce 5-6kW of heat energy for every 1kW of electricity it consumes. That is a coefficient of performance (COP) of 5 or 6, making it 5 to 6 times more efficient than a direct electric heater running at the same output.

Pool heat pumps work most efficiently in ambient temperatures above 10-15°C, which makes them ideal for the UK swimming season from roughly April through to October. Full inverter models extend this range and operate efficiently in cooler conditions, making them a viable year-round solution for heated pool environments.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with this team to get an MVHR extractor fan unit fixed in one of my properties, and I couldn’t be happier with their service. They always communicate promptly, are honest, and deliver high-quality work. Special thanks to Serena for her exceptional support throughout the process. The team offers excellent value for specialist work, and I will definitely work with them again in the future. Highly recommended!

I usually avoid writing reviews, but this experience has been so consistently bad across two separate jobs that it needs to be said.

Between myself and a friend, we have dealt with the same pattern of behavior from this company. In both cases, the work was overpriced, unprofessional, and in the end, not even completed properly.

In my situation, they came out three separate times and still failed to fix the issue, yet tried to charge over £2600 for a repair that another engineer completed in a single visit for £1300. To make matters worse, the engineer acted as if he was doing me a favor by offering a “special price”, when in reality it was still well over what was reasonable. He also spent a lot of time criticizing other companies, claiming he gets so much work because of their incompetence.

My friend’s experience was equally unacceptable. They hired the company to install air conditioning, only to be overcharged and supplied with second-hand, faulty parts. After the job was supposedly finished, the property smells of cigarettes. Completely unprofessional and disrespectful.

Across both jobs, the themes are the same:
• Overcharging and pressure tactics
• Failing to fix the actual problem
• Unprofessional behavior and bad-mouthing competitors
• Poor workmanship and careless mess left behind
• Questionable record-keeping and excuses when challenged

Several people in the local trade have since mentioned that the business has gone downhill recently, which matches our experiences.

This review will remain because other customers deserve to know the risk before spending their money. I genuinely wish I didn’t have to write this, but when people are being let down, overcharged, and spoken to disrespectfully — especially vulnerable or elderly customers — it needs to be said.

I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

I hired Sussex Air Con to install some air conditioning in my 81-year-old mother's home. Not only did they take advantage of her and overcharge, but they used second-hand, faulty parts. After the work was completed (if you could call it finished), muddy footprints were left throughout the property, and cigarette ends and cans of Red Bull were littered all over the garden.

After speaking to a friend who works for another local maintenance company, it seems that in recent months the company has fallen apart. DO NOT USE!

I used to have a contract with Daikin for my Air Source Heat Pump and their service was terrible. I switched to Sussex Air Conditioning & Heat Pumps a couple of years ago and they have been amazing. Great customer service, very responsive, and they seem to know the heating system much better than the Daikin team did. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Excellent company. I first contacted them some 6 months ago regarding an air-to-air heat pump for my Grandpa annex. Paul came and surveyed and gave much useful advice. Positioning of the exterior unit was tricky, and had to be changed several times.

For one reason or another I wasn't able to go ahead until towards the end of April, but once I pushed the start button, it all happened rapidly and competently, and now I have a truly fine system, rapid and economical, which heats when it's cold and cools when it's hot.

These guys know what they are doing.

We recently used Sussex Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps Limited to install a split system with two air conditioning units for our home.
The initial contact and quote was quick and efficient and the price quoted was as expected with no surprises.
Administration back up was quick and efficient throughout the process and any changes to our original plans were agreed quickly.
The installation was carried out by Paul and Leo. Paul consulted us throughout the process and they both worked hard to complete the job well within the suggested time frame. Everything was tidied up as they went along and how it all worked was explained to us clearly prior to them leaving.
Many thanks to the team at Sussex Air Conditioning and heat pumps I am very happy to recommend you to all of my friends and family.

Swimming pool heat pump systems we install

We supply and install pool heat pump systems from leading manufacturers, specifying the right unit for your pool volume, location, and usage pattern after a free site survey.

Air source pool heat pumps

Air source pool heat pumps are the most widely installed system in the UK. They draw heat from the ambient air and transfer it to the pool water via a refrigerant circuit. Modern units are compact, quiet, and straightforward to install alongside existing pool filtration and pipework. We install both single-speed and full inverter models – inverter units are significantly more efficient and quieter, and are our recommended choice for most domestic and commercial installations.

Full inverter pool heat pumps

Full inverter technology allows the compressor to run at variable speeds, adjusting output to match the pool’s heating demand rather than switching on and off at full power. This reduces energy consumption, extends the operating temperature range, and significantly reduces noise levels compared to fixed-speed units. For pools that are used regularly and need to maintain a consistent temperature, a full inverter heat pump is the most cost-effective long-term choice.

Commercial pool heat pumps

For leisure centres, hotels, holiday parks, and spa facilities, we specify and install commercial-grade pool heat pump systems with the output and reliability required for high-use environments. Commercial installations require accurate load calculations and often involve integration with existing plant room systems – we carry out full site surveys and provide detailed system specifications before any work begins.

Swimming pool heat pump costs

Cost is the most common question we are asked about pool heat pumps, and understandably so. Here is a straightforward guide based on our experience installing systems across Sussex.

How much does a swimming pool heat pump cost to buy and install?

For a typical domestic outdoor pool in the UK, a supply and installation package starts from around £2,500-£3,500 for a quality air source unit on a straightforward installation. Larger pools, full inverter models, and more complex installations will carry higher costs. Commercial systems for leisure facilities are priced on a per-project basis following a site survey. We provide full written quotations before any work begins with no obligation.

How much does a pool heat pump cost to run?

Running costs depend on pool size, target temperature, local climate, and how often the pool is used. As a general guide, heating a typical 8m x 4m outdoor pool to 28°C using a full inverter heat pump in the UK costs approximately £3-£6 per day during the main swimming season, compared to £10-£20 per day for an equivalent electric heater running at the same output. Over a full swimming season of around 180 days, the difference in running costs typically more than covers the cost of the heat pump itself.

Are pool heat pumps worth it?

For most pool owners in Sussex, yes. The combination of lower running costs compared to electric or gas heating, a typical payback period of 2-4 seasons, and the ability to extend the swimming season by 2-3 months makes a heat pump the most cost-effective pool heating solution in the UK climate. Full inverter models have come down significantly in price over the past few years and now represent strong value for domestic pool owners.

Hot tub and spa heat pumps

We also supply and install heat pump systems for hot tubs, outdoor spas, and commercial spa facilities. The principle is the same as a pool heat pump – extracting heat from the ambient air and transferring it to the water – but the units are specified for the smaller volume and higher target temperatures typically required for spa use.

For commercial spa facilities, we work with the facility’s plant room team to integrate the heat pump system with existing water treatment and heating infrastructure. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
